Why are things different when you cross the U.S.-Mexico border?
By K. Flewelling

Our new border projects focuses on the question, "What difference does a border make?" and every week, you will be asked to give a short (200-300 word) respond to one of our essential questions. As you answer these questions, remember that there is no right or wrong answer. This is a chance to explore your current ideas, and express your current opinions.
Many of us have had the experience of crossing an international border. In class, some of you pointed out that when you cross the U.S-Mexico border, it even smells different. But why is that? As you answer this week's question ("Why are things different when you cross the U.S.-Mexico border"), think first, "What is different when you cross the border?" and think second, "Why is that true?"
Think especially about the culture -- remembering that "culture" is a "way we do things." It includes things like the food we eat, the language we speak, and the ways we look and dress. Are any of these things different? Why do you think so?
If you run out of things that are different when you cross the border, can you think of some things that are the same?

If you are wondering how long 200 words is, this post is exactly 270 words.
Have a terrifically awesome weekend! Don't forget to read the newspaper for our FIRST thing on Monday.

Whoo oo thsi is my 1st comment weel i think that the border thing its not working because why do people dont want mexicans in the country they are not doing anything wrong. The "illegal" people just want a better future for them and for their children. People die from trying to cross the border every other day. Some people make it over some dont. If they come here to the US they work. La MIGRA comes and takes take them away and deport them, they sometimes get arrested while they are working. Last week a factory owner got arrested because he had illegal alien working in the factory. Bush also is wasting money on high tech stuff to stop illegal alien. Also bush wants over 370 miles of a new fence.
Also politics is very different.hope this is enough and i hope i answered the quiestion.
This question is a bit awkward for me to answer, seeing as I've never been out of the country, but I'll do my best...
The first thing I noticed when crossing the U.S.-Mexico border was security. Mainly because it took me less than 30 seconds to get into the country of Mexico. I also noticed the view was different. Instead of having spaced out homes and buildings. Everything was compact as far as the eye could see. Many people of all ages were eager to sell you something. From chicklets to fake rolex watches. The people were very kind, the city was busy and conjested. Something that I noticed about law and order in Mexico was the police officers did what they wanted. When leaving mexico I noticed that while taking 30 seconds to enter into Mexico, it took over 45 minutes just to get enter the U.S. Customs building to return to the U.S.
This is what I noticed when I entered and exited Mexico, yeah.
